How to Root Android P (Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL)

Google released Android P Developer Preview on March 7th 2018. You can download Android P developer preview on your Pixel smartphones from here, and install the same by following the instructions here. In this post we are going to tell you how to root Android P on your Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones.

Make sure your Google Pixel smartphone is charged 70-80 percent.

Pre-Requisites

Make sure you are running Android P developer preview on your Google Pixel smartphone. You can download Android P developer preview on your Pixel smartphones from here, and install the same by following the instructions here.

Please ensure you have enabled USB debugging and OEM unlock. To do so, Navigate to Settings -> About on your Google Pixel XL and tap on build number seven times. Once you see a message saying “Your are now a developer” go back to Settings and you will see an option called Developer Options. Open developer options and enable USB debugging and OEM Unlock.

Make sure you have drivers for Google Pixel smartphone installed and have Unlocked the bootloader. If you haven’t unlocked the bootloader, click the links below for detailed instructions.

Make sure adb and fastboot are setup on your computer (Windows, Mac or Linux) and working. Click the link below to learn how to setup adb and fastboot on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Download modified TWRP Recovery for your respective Google Pixel smartphone from below links, make sure to download the .img file. Once downloaded, rename it to recovery.img and place it in platform-tools folder.

Download below file and place the zip file in internal memory of your Google Pixel smartphone.

How to Root Android P (Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL)

Step 1 – Boot Google Pixel smartphone into fastboot mode

Turn off your Google Pixel smartphone.  Press and hold PowerVolume Down until you see a Start screen.

You can also boot into fastboot mode while device is on :-

  1. Connect Google Pixel smartphone to computer using usb cable.
  2. Open command prompt (for Windows) or Terminal (for Mac and Linux).
  3. Navigate to platform-tools folder and issue below command.

Windows

adb reboot bootloader

Mac or Linux

./adb reboot bootloader

Step 2 – Boot TWRP Recovery on Google Pixel Smartphone

Open command prompt (for Windows) or Terminal (for Mac and Linux). Navigate to platform-tools folder and issue below command.

Windows

fastboot boot recovery.img

Mac or Linux

./fastboot boot recovery.img

You should now boot into TWRP recovery on your Google Pixel smartphone. Make sure to choose “Keep read only“.

Step 3 – Root Android P using Magisk

Once in TWRP click on Install, then select Magisk zip file downloaded in pre-requisites. Next swipe to confirm flashing of zip files.

 

Step 4 – Reboot into Android

Click on back, then on Reboot and then on System and you will boot into Android.

Congratulations, you just your Google Pixel smartphone running Android P.

How to : Check Android P Root on Google Pixel Smartphone

In case you want to check if your Google Pixel smartphone is rooted or not, download Root Checker app, open it and click on Verify Root. If you are rooted you will get an appropriate message.
