1) Mother India ( 1957 )

Radha belongs to a poor farmer’s family. She gets married to Shyamu, also a farmer, and both begin their lives in harmony. Shyamu’s mother borrows money from a local money-lender named Sukhilal and agrees to provide him with three-fourths of the farm produce in lieu of money, to which Sukhilal agrees, and asks her to sign a document to this effect, which she does so, not knowing that she is signing away her farm produce and her mortgage of her property. Unable to bear this unpleasantness, Shyamu disappears, leaving Radha alone to bring up two sons, Ramu and Birju. While Ramu is dependable and devoted to his mother, Birju is arrogant and crass. Birju is against Sukhilal and would like him to turn the family’s land over to them, but Sukhilal will not do so. Birju attacks Sukhilal and, as a result, is excommunicated from his village and turns into a bandit, bent on vengeance against the deceptive Sukhilal, much to the sorrow and dismay of his mother and brother. While Radha is hopeful that her love will make Birju mend his ways, Birju, on the other hand, is planning something quite the opposite.

2) Manjhi: The Mountain Man ( 2015 )

Dashrath Manjhi was a poor man from the lowest of the low castes, living in a remote village cut off from the world by a rocky mountain range. Life for him was a daily struggle for survival. He loved his wife, Phaguniya, beyond belief. One day, while climbing the mountain to bring him food, his wife slipped, fell and died. Overwhelmed by grief, Dashrath decided to carve out a path through the mountain, so that no one else would suffer his fate. For 22 years, all by himself, with just a hammer and a chisel, he hammered away at the rocks, till the path was carved out from the mountain.  

3) Do Bheega Jameen ( 1957 )

  A small Bengali landowner and his young son are in danger when their two-acre farmland where they live is in danger of being taken over by a local zamindar for failure to pay for mounting debits. They move to Calcutta where the father tries making a living as a rickshaw puller while his wife joins him but falls ill which threatens everything they have going to try to save their ancestorial home.

4) 3 Idiot ( 2009 )

Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi want to re-unite with their fellow collegian, Rancho, after faking a stroke aboard an Air India plane, and excusing himself from his wife – trouser less – respectively. Enroute, they encounter another student, Chatur Ramalingam, now a successful businessman, who reminds them of a bet they had undertaken 10 years ago. The trio, while recollecting hilarious antics, including their run-ins with the Dean of Delhi’s Imperial College of Engineering, Viru Sahastrabudhe, race to locate Rancho, at his last known address – little knowing the secret that was kept from them all this time.

5) Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India( 2001 )

This is the story about the resilience shown by the Indians when they were under the British Rule. They are already taxed to the bone by the British and their cronies, but when Jack Russell announces that he will double the Lagaan (tax) from all villagers, they decide to oppose it. Leading the villagers is a handsome young man named Bhuvan, who challenges them to a game of cricket, a game that is to be played by veteran British cricket players, versus villagers, including Bhuvan himself, who have never played this game before, and do not even know a bat from a piece of wood. As the challenge is accepted, the interest grows and attracts Indians from all over the region, as well as the British from all over the country – as everyone gathers to see the ‘fair play’ that the British will display against their counter-parts, who are aided by none other than the sister, Elizabeth, of Captain Rusell.

6)  Taare Zameen Par ( 2007 )

An art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh teaches at a local boarding school and thinks that every child is special and must have his chance of enjoying his/her school days, so he breaks all the rules of ‘how things are done’ in the school to let his motives became successful, all the children respond to him with joy, all except a small boy named Ishaan Awasthi, of eight years old who seems to be in a different world all the time. Nikumbh soon finds out that Ishaan is unhappy about something. He attempts to help him. The questions remain will he be successful or will the errant prove dangerous for him.

7)  I Am Kalaam ( 2011 )

Meera leaves her young son, Chhotu, to work with Bhati, who runs a Dhaba in the Rajasthani desert so that they can pay off their debt. After a few weeks, Chhotu, who now calls himself Kamal, comes to visit her along with a Caucasian woman, Lucie and asks permission to visit Delhi. Meera is apprehensive about Lucie and does not permit her son to go anywhere with her. She subsequently comes to visit him, to see how he is making out at the Dhaba, and it is here she will face nothing but humiliation when she will be told that her son has stolen books and clothing from Kunver Ranvijay Singh, the only son of Raja Rudra Pratap Singh. When asked to apologize, Kamal not only refuses but runs away to an unknown location – leaving Bhati to face Raja’s wrath.

Swades is a terrific movie that sends a message of patriotic love. Mohan Bhargava(SRK) is a scientist working for NASA who returns India to take back an elderly woman (Kaveriamma) who helped him grew up. Mohan discovers and realizes more about Indian origins. He realizes that his country requires him more than any other country. He starts and successfully completes a project of providing electricity to the village in which Kaveriamma is residing. He falls in love with Gita, a school teacher, who stays with Kaveriamma. He realizes the importance of staying in India with her and after one trip decides to stay forever in India.

10) Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander ( 1992 )

Sanjay Lal and Ratan Lal are poor local kids in the beautiful scenic college town of Dehradun. They are always dreaming about being rich and famous. However, while Ratan is willing to work for it, Sanjay wants everything to be given to him. When Ratan loses a crucial race to a rich kid from the snobbish Rajput School, Ratan’s father vows to win back the race for the town’s poor folks. The movie deals with the trials and tribulation of two men’s dreams and of Sanjay’s desire to date a rich girl–he gets this opportunity when Devika (Pooja Bedi) comes to town and joins the rich girls’ college. Bluffing his way through, he wins Devika’s heart as Anjali watches her heart and soul break away. However, when Devika finds out who Sanjay really is, she dumps him and goes back to Deepak Tijori (the rich kid). Before the crucial race, Deepak Tijori and friends almost kill Ratan, who is now unable to compete in the race. Sanjay takes over and with the moral support of his father and his brother, he tries to win the race and Anjali back.
