How to Root Google Pixel 2 XL With Magisk

Google unveiled the Google Pixel 2 XL on October 4th 2017, and the device started shipping on October 19th 2017. Most Google/Nexus devices are rooted within a week of it being delivered, but the Google Pixel 2 XL took longer. Anyways, the wait is finally over and you can now root Google Pixel 2 XL. Let us go ahead and see how to root Google Pixel 2 XL with Magisk.

Make sure your Google Pixel 2 XL is charged 70-80 percent.

Pre-Requisites

Make sure you have drivers for Google Pixel 2XL installed and have Unlocked the bootloader. If you haven’t we have hit the link below.

Next, please ensure you have enabled USB debugging and OEM unlock. To do so, Navigate to Settings -> About on your Google Pixel 2 XL and tap on build number seven times. Once you see a message saying “Your are now a developer” go back to Settings and you will see an option called Developer Options. Open developer options and enable USB debugging and OEM Unlock.

How to Root Google Pixel 2 XL With Magisk

Step 1 – Download and Extract Factory Image

On your computer, download the factory image zip file for Google Pixel 2 XL from the link below.

Once downloaded, extract the zip file. Go to the extracted folder and you will find a file called boot.img. This is your stock boot.img file. We need to transfer this file to your Pixel 2 XL. Connect your Pixel 2 to the computer and transfer the boot.img file.

Step 2 – Download and Install Magisk Manager

Download and Install Magisk Manager v5.4.1 on your Google Pixel 2 XL but clicking the link below.

Step 3 – Patch Boot.img

Once you have installed Magisk Manager open it, and Press Install > Install > Patch Boot Image File, and select your stock boot image file (from step 1). This will patch your stock boot.img and store it in [Internal Storage]/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img.

Step 4 – Flash Patched Boot.img

Connect your Pixel 2 XL to the computer, and copy the patched_boot.img file (from Step 3 above) to platform-tools folder (from setting up adb part in pre-requisites).

Next, we need to boot Google Pixel 2 XL into bootloader mode.

  1. Open command prompt (for Windows) or Terminal (for Mac and Linux).
  2. Navigate to platform-tools folder and issue below command.

Windows

adb reboot bootloader

Mac or Linux

./adb reboot bootloader

Once Google Pixel 2 XL has booted into fastboot mode, issue below command to check if it is recognized in fastboot mode or not.

fastboot devices

Mac or Linux

./fastboot devices

If you see your Google Pixel 2 XL phone listed, then you are good. If not, then fastboot was not setup correctly.

Issue below command to flash patched_boot.img on your Google Pixel 2 XL.

Windows

fastboot flash boot boot_patched.img

Mac or Linux

./fastboot flash boot boot_patched.img

Step 5 – Reboot Google Pixel 2 XL into Android

Windows

fastboot reboot

Mac or Linux

./fastboot reboot
