Google Pixel 2 smartphones are being delivered to Pixel owners, and if you are a fan of custom roms then we suggest you unlock the bootlader before you setup your new phone. Unlocking the bootloader factory resets a device in most cases, hence the advice. In this post, we are going to take a look at Google Pixel 2 bootloader unlock. As long as you have access to a computer (Windows, Mac or Linux) unlocking the bootloader on your Google Pixel 2 is an easy task.

Pre-Requisites

Ensure you have enabled USB debugging and OEM unlock. To do so, Navigate to Settings -> About on your Google Pixel 2 and tap on build number seven times. Once you see a message saying “Your are now a developer” go back to Settings and you will see an option called Developer Options. Open developer options and enable USB debugging and OEM Unlock.

How to Google Pixel 2 Bootloader Unlock

Please note this will factory reset your phone and all your data will be wiped. Make sure to have a backup.

Step 1 – Boot into fastboot mode

Boot into fastboot mode while device is on :-

  1. Connect Google Pixel 2 Phone to computer using usb cable.
  2. Open command prompt (for Windows) or Terminal (for Mac and Linux).
  3. Navigate to platform-tools folder and issue below command.

Windows

adb reboot bootloader

Mac or Linux

./adb reboot bootloader

Step 2 – Check Device in Fastboot Mode

Once Google Pixel 2 has booted into fastboot mode, issue below command to check if it is recognized in fastboot mode or not.

Windows

fastboot devices

Mac or Linux

./fastboot devices

If you see your Google Pixel 2 phone listed, then you are good. If not, then fastboot was not setup correctly.

Step 3 – Google Pixel 2 Bootloader Unlock

Issue below command to unlock the bootloader on your Google Pixel 2.

Windows

fastboot flashing unlock

Mac or Linux

./fastboot flashing unlock

You will now get a warning on your Google Pixel 2 phone to confirm the bootloader unlock. Follow the instructions on screen and you are good to go.

Step 4 – Reboot Google Pixel 2 into Android

Windows

fastboot reboot

Mac or Linux

./fastboot reboot
