Are you looking for big front brakes on your S197 (2005 – 2015) Mustang? You don’t want to spend in excess of $600? If that’s the case you can do with takeoff front calipers of a S550 (2015-2018) Mustang GT. In this post we are going to list all the parts you need to install S550 brakes on S197. The front calipers on S550 Mustang GT are 4 piston, and cheaper when compared to the 4 piston Brembo calipers.

S550 brakes on S197

Mustang 2015-2018 GT S550 Brakes on S197 (Mustang 2005-2014)

Disclaimer

This is not a how to guide. This is just a list of all the parts needed.

Pre-Requistes

For starters, you need to make sure your existing wheels will clear the Mustang 2015 – 2018 GT calipers, because these calipers are big, even bigger than 4 piston Brembo calipers.

s550 caliper size

We installed Mustang 2015 GT 4 piston calipers on American Muscle 19×8.5 wheels and did not have any clearance issues. A lot of people have used 3-5mm wheel spacers to clear the calipers. We have linked the spacers used by some fellow Mustang enthusiasts below.

(2) 3mm 5×114.3 / 5×4.5 Hubcentric Wheel Spacers for Ford Mustang

(2) 5mm 5×114.3 / 5×4.5 Hubcentric Wheel Spacers for Ford Mustang

Parts Required

1. Mustang 2015-2018 GT (S550) Front Calipers

First thing we need is front calipers off a 2015 – 2018 Mustang GT (S550). You can buy them of eBay for anything between $225-$275. Make sure to buy calipers only, do not buy sets with rotors. Below is a sample listing.

Mustang 2015-2018 GT 5.0 Front Calipers

2. Mustang 2015-2018 GT (S550) Front Brake Pads

In all probability, front calipers you buy off eBay will come with brake pads. Ours did too, but we decided to buy new brake pads as we didn’t want to use used brake pads with our brand new rotors. Below is the link to the Centric brake pads we ordered. You can order any brake pads for a Mustang 2015 – 2018 GT (S550).

Centric 309.10010 Brake Pads

Some Other Brake Pad Options

Powerstop Z26

Hawk Performance Street

Hawk Performance Street 5.0

Hawk Performance Street Race

3. Mustang 2005 – 2014 (S197) 14 inch Rotors

The next thing we need is 14 inch rotors for a Mustang 2005 – 2014. For our build, we used Centric blank rotors, but you are free to buy drilled and slotted as well as long as they are 14 inches. Below is the link to Centric rotors we used, make sure to buy 2. One for driver side, and one for passenger side.

Centric 120.61089 Premium Rotors

Please note, rotors off a 2015 – 2018 Mustang GT will not fit 2005 – 2014 Mustangs as the hat is different.

Some Other Rotor Options

Drilled and Slotted

Centric Sport Drilled and Slotted  127.61089L – Front Left

Centric Sport Drilled and Slotted 127.61089R – Front Right

Slotted

Centric Sport Slotted 126.61089SL  – Front Left

Centric Sport Slotted 126.61089SR  – Front Right

4. Stainless Steel Brake Lines

The next thing we need is Stainless Steel brake lines. You cannot use the brake lines from S550 calipers on a S197. We bought the Stoptech Stainless Steel Brake lines, but we do not recommend them for reasons mentioned below.

  • The quality of banjo bolts with this set is not good, and one of them broke even before it could be fully tightened to 26 ft-lb.
  • You will need a TR15 screwdriver to screw the brake line to the support on the cars body.

centric brake line nut

  • On the driver side, the bracket for the brake line comes in the way of the plastic cover. We had to cut the plastic cover a little bit.

driver side issue

Stop Tech 950.61003 Stainless Steel Brake Lines

We suggest you go with either of the two brake lines mentioned below.

J&M Stainless Steel Brake Lines

Russell Stainless Steel Brake Lines

5. Washer for the Calipers

With the S550 Caliper on a S197, the rotor is not centered. To center the rotor, we need a washer on each of the bolts used to mount the caliper. In all you will need four of these washers. The washer need to be between the bolt and the caliper, so bolt -> spindle -> washer -> caliper.

s550 caliper s197

Below is the link to the washers we used.

Dorman 766-014n

You might also need a piston compression tool. Below is the link to the one we used.

That’s it peeps! Drive safe.

Best Safe USB Type C Cables, Chargers for Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL

Technology is supposed to make your life easier, that’w what I had thought until I bought a Google Pixel 2 smartphone. The Google Pixel 2 does not come with a USB Type A to Type C cable, the one you would use to transfer data from your computer to the phone. So, I decided I would buy one. Also, this being my first USB Type C device I decided to buy another charger, and a few extra USB Type C to Type C cables. And, that was the worst decision I have made in quite some time. Now, I am down the rabbit hole with fear of blowing up my Pixel 2 if I use the wrong cable. We will go down into those details after the break, but if you are in the same boat as me you need not worry. In this post, we are going to list the best safe USB Type C Cables, Chargers for Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL.

safe usb type c pixel 2

Best Safe USB Type C Cables, Chargers for Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL

USB Charging Specifications

We have two USB Charging standards, USB-BC(Battery Charging) and USB-PD(Power Delivery).

USB-BC was designed for USB Type A to micro-usb, but it also includes the USB Type A to USB Type C cables. USB-BC can sustain a maximum of 12W (2.4A at 5V).

USB-PD was designed for USB Type C to Type C. It is a newer specification and it can sustain a maximum of 100W (5A at 20V). An important point to note here is, when it comes to charging a device, the possibilities here are endless and you are at the manufacturers mercy. Things will be clear once you read ahead.

Google Pixel 2 Charging Specifications

Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL uses USB-PD. From the factory, Google Pixel 2 comes with an 18W charger from Google, along with a USB Type C to Type C cable. The Pixel 2 fast charges at 15W and 18W. To achieve these watts, you can have a charger pushing out 3A at 5W or 2A at 7.5W for 15W, and 2A at 9V or 3A at 6W for 18W.

You would think that all those combinations would ensure that your Pixel 2 will be fast charging. No, for the Pixel 2 to be fast charging at 15W you need a charger pushing out 3A at 5W, and for it to be fast charging at 18W you need 2A at 9W. This is what we meant, when we said your at the manufacturers mercy.

The Problem with USB A to USB C Cables

Way back in 2015, when USB Type C was being introduced in smartphones had computer with no USB Type C ports. So, to connect our smartphones to the computer we needed a USB Type A to Type C cable.

usb type a to usb type c

To ensure that all goes well, the USB Type C end of the cable is supposed to have a 56kΩ resistor. This resistor lets the smartphone know that it’s connected to an USB Type A device for charging. In this case, the smartphone would automatically adjust to draw only 1.5A or 2.4A. To make cheaper USB Type A to USB Type C cables, manufacturers cheaped out on the 56kΩ resistor, and replaced it with a 10kΩ resistor or completely skipping it. This resulted in the smartphone drawing more amperes from the USB Type A device which caused the host device’s USB Type A port to be damaged. This issue was first reported by Google Engineer Benson Leung. Accessory manufacturer, Anker also screwed up and issued a recall on one it’s cables.

Conclusion

That is the short version of all the reading I have been doing just to make sure I have the correct charger and USB Type A to Type C cable for my Google Pixel 2. Never thought, buying a charger and cable for a smartphone would be such a cumbersome task. Anyways, all said an done we have come up with a list of best safe USB Type C Cables, Chargers for your Pixel 2 after reading various posts on xda and reddit.
